In amongst the faux fur, animal print and check trends, there’s a classic design that doesn’t go out of style regardless of the season. It’s polka and I’d go as far as saying I’m obsessed with it. I find it simplistic yet classic, charming and chic. That’s a bit of a mouthful however it’s true. What would otherwise be a plain black dress (let’s get to the splits later) with a high collar and 3/4 sleeves, is instantly eye catching thanks to the fine, polka design. I would usually steer clear of maxi dresses especially with a high neck as it could very easily swamp my petite frame however this one is different.
Firstly, I ordered from the petite section of Topshop which is at times, a lifesaver. Ok not quite but if I’d have bought this from the regular section then I would 100% have returned as it simply wouldn’t have worked.
Secondly, the pattern is not too overwhelming. The dots are small and subtle but effective.
Lastly, the splits. I was a bit worried I have to admit but actually without them, the dress wouldn’t work for me personally. The hint of leg and glimpse of skin every now and again (or all of the time if you wear it on a particularly windy day like I did) totally cuts through and helps to elongate the silhouette. They do cut quite high but are flattering at the same time and why not take a bit of a risk. What’s the worst that will happen? You might flash someone, oh well life goes on.
