Venice

Since I won’t have my camera this week, I thought I’d share a few more travel related posts.

When I joined Emirates, there were a few places I was desperate to visit. Top of my list was Rio de Janeiro but unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to go there.

Not to worry though, I’ll get there someday….

Second on my list was Venice and on the 14th of October 2012, I got the chance to visit.

We arrived at Marco Polo Airport around 7pm after a very uneventful flight and headed to the hotel.  I had heard about a great little pizza place right next to the hotel and was delighted when a few of the crew agreed to go there as soon as we arrived.  We made a very quick change out of our uniform, removed the red lipstick and went next door to enjoy some good italian food.

I had a Vegetarian Pizza and it was the most amazing thing I have ever eaten!  Pizza is so simple to make but I’ve never tasted pizza like this before.  Firstly, it was bloody huge, it could have easily fed 2 or 3 people – you may (or may not) depending on how well you know me – be surprised to know I ate every single piece of it!  Secondly, it cost like 5 euros – I KNOW!!! Who said Italy was expensive!

Anyway we enjoyed the food and headed back to the hotel for an early night.

The next day, I woke up early and was eager to get out exploring this beautiful place.

I headed out with one of the girls who had visited before and kindly acted as my tour guide for the day. We took the bus into Venice and then the water boat for a little tour around the city.  As much as it looks amazing in pictures and on tv etc – being in Venice was so much more beautiful than I ever imagined.  The architecture is unbelievable and it’s just crazy how the city functions.  It was buzzing with tourists and we walked for hours exploring the city, stopping for lunch in an extremely overpriced cafe – OK maybe Italy is expensive…

I didn’t love Venice – I absolutely ADORED it and I am desperate to go back and spend some more time discovering all the things I missed.

The one thing I regret about my time in Venice was that I didn’t take enough pictures.  In fact, I didn’t take any photos really, except one.

I took this photo and at the time I didn’t think anything of it.  I’m not even sure why I decided this was worth a photo when I hadn’t taken any other pictures.

After exploring we headed back to the hotel and arrived just in the nick of time – the sky turned grey and the rain started pelting down.

Venice is a very special place and although my time there was short, it has left me with a strong desire to return soon.

I flew back to Dubai then straight on to Glasgow to spend 5 days with my family.

When I arrived at my home after 4 months away, I noticed a new picture on the wall.  It took me a few minutes to realise what it was…

Then it dawned on me – I had taken the exact same photograph.

My mum didn’t even know this was Venice when she bought it.

It still blows my mind that I only took one photo from my time in Venice and when I return home, I find the exact same photo on the wall in my home.

What are the chances?
