Petite Paulina – The “Flying Wastra: A Journey” exhibition took place from November 15 to 30, 2024, at the Nusantara Museum of Arts and Culture in Jakarta. The Ministry of Culture, the Nusantara Heritage Foundation, and the Nusantara Museum organized this event. It celebrated a local designer’s 25-year dedication to promoting traditional textiles and sustainability. Consequently, the exhibition became a milestone for the designer and the wider fashion industry.
The designer, widely known for their innovative use of traditional fabrics, expressed immense pride in achieving this milestone. “I’ve always dreamed of showcasing my collection in a museum in my own country. Thanks to the support of many, I’ve now fulfilled that dream. I hope this exhibition will inspire other designers to present their works in cultural spaces,” they shared. Moreover, the exhibition highlighted fashion pieces and told the stories behind each fabric and its crafting techniques. In addition, interactive discussions with cultural and artistic figures further enriched the event.

The grand finale of the exhibition featured a stunning fashion show titled “Celebrating the Beauty of Wastra Nusantara”. This show presented designs that successfully blended modern aesthetics with traditional textiles such as songket, ikat, and batik cap. Among the highlights, the collection included ready-to-wear items like loose outerwear, elegant dresses, and formal suits.
Furthermore, the designer chose a color palette ranging from earthy tones to vibrant hues like orange and maroon. Notably, models such as Ayu Gani, Patricia Gouw, and Asmara Abigail brought the creations to life with confidence and style.
Sustainability played a central role throughout the exhibition. The designer used natural fibers and organic dyes, demonstrating a commitment to eco-friendly fashion. Additionally, the designer adopted a circular economy approach to minimize waste and maximize resources.
“We must ensure sustainability not only for today but also for future generations. Small actions can create big changes,” the designer emphasized. By incorporating these practices, the designer set a valuable example for the fashion industry.
To conclude the event, the designer presented special textiles to individuals who had supported cultural preservation. This gesture symbolized their commitment to giving back to those who have contributed to the preservation of Indonesia’s cultural heritage. Moving forward, they hope this exhibition will inspire younger generations to value and sustain traditional textiles.
