The Flying Cloth goes beyond being an exhibition; it provides an immersive experience that combines art and culture. Visitors can join workshops, seminars, and cultural performances. They will explore topics like natural dyeing, weaving, and traditional ceremonies, including the Batak ceremonies, which are rich in history and spiritual meaning.
Merdi explains that the exhibition aims to offer a new perspective on fashion. “Each piece reflects my journey to celebrate Indonesia’s cultural wealth and empower communities through their traditions,” he says.
Through the Merdi Sihombing Foundation and Eco Fashion Indonesia, Merdi has traveled to remote areas of Indonesia. He collaborates with indigenous communities to revive traditional weaving techniques. For Merdi, preserving tradition and sustainability remains crucial for future generations.
“This event also serves as a platform to inspire the younger generation,” Merdi adds. “They can engage in empowerment and sustainability efforts.”
The Flying Cloth invites visitors to explore Indonesia’s diverse cultures. From the Baduy people’s balanced relationship with nature to the vibrant colors of Alor, the exhibition tells the story of how Indonesian culture has survived and evolved over time.
The exhibition opens with a gala reception and fashion show. It also features a series of events over two weeks, including workshops, seminars, and discussions. Topics will include natural dyeing, the harms of fast fashion, and the philosophical designs in ulos.
Experts such as Merdi Sihombing, Eriek N Juragan, and other leading practitioners will share their insights on creating environmentally friendly and culturally rich fashion. Cultural performances, like the Batak Karo wedding ceremony and Gondang music, will enrich the experience.
Sponsors like Bank Mandiri, Pertamina, and Make Over support the event. The exhibition also collaborates with artists such as Heri Pemad (art director) and Ignatia Nilu (curator). Visitors can bring their old textiles to repair or upcycle into new creations.
The Flying Cloth offers a must-attend experience for anyone interested in fashion that promotes sustainability, empowerment, and the preservation of Indonesia’s cultural heritage.
